It has emerged that Simon Mayo’s All Request Friday show on Radio 2 has attracted him a torrent of abuse and even death threats over the weekly playing of the Muppets version of Piero Umiliani’s Mah Nà Mah Nà.

The offending song is part of an in-joke at the station and plays every Friday at approximately 5.15pm. While many listeners find the song a fun and friendly introduction to the weekend, others have reacted poorly to say the least and have taken it out directly at the show’s presenter.

Some listeners can’t cope with the weekly segment

Bluffington had a chance to speak with Mr Mayo this afternoon:

At first some of the e-mails I received were quite tame, things like “Please stop playing that fucking song, it’s not funny anymore” were common. Over the coming weeks and months things abruptly escalated into threats of violence and death.

One listener wrote to me “One night I’m going to come to you inside of your house or wherever you’re sleeping and I’m going to cut your throat”. On average I receive five or six threats to my life a week but I’m going to continue playing the song as the majority of people like the feeling of routine in their mundane lives.

Investigations are ongoing to find the offenders.
